On the occasion of her birth anniversary, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge paid homage to Sarojini Naidu, a poet, former congresswoman, and freedom fighter.
In a tweet, Mallikarjun said, "Her immense service to the nation, an integral component of India's war for Independence, inspires every single one of us to this day."
The Nightingale of India or Bharatiya Kokila is a more popular moniker for Sarojini Naidu. She was born on February 13, 1879, and from the age of 12 onwards, she showed a penchant for writing. The Broken Wings, a collection of her poems, was released in 1905.
She joined the Indian national movement during the 1905 Bengal partition. She made significant contributions to the country's independence.
In Kanpur, she presided over the Indian National Congress' annual meeting in 1925, and in South Africa, in 1929, she addressed the East African Indian Congress. In 1930, Madan Mohan Malaviya and Mahatma Gandhi joined Naidu at the Round Table Conference.
Later, Uttar Pradesh (then known as the United Provinces) selected Sarojini Naidu as its governor. On March 2, 1949, she passed away at Lucknow's Government House.
