In a significant move towards breaking gender stereotypes, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has recruited six women drivers to operate their K-SWIFT e-buses. Currently, four of these women drivers are undergoing training at the Attakulangara KSRTC staff training centre in Thiruvananthapuram.
Among the pioneering women drivers is Sreekutty K M, a 25-year-old from Thrissur, who expressed her joy and gratitude for the state government's initiative. She mentioned facing numerous rejections from private bus owners, but she now sees this opportunity as a catalyst for change in society's perception that women can handle heavy vehicles, particularly buses.
Sreekutty is joined by three other trailblazing women: Sheena Sam, 28, from Nilambur; Jisna Joy C, 22, also from Thrissur; and Anila S, 32, a native of Thiruvananthapuram. They are excited to be at the forefront of KSRTC's efforts to challenge gender stereotypes in the public sphere.
These women drivers were selected from a pool of 112 candidates based on their qualifications, with 62 being shortlisted for further consideration. Out of the 62, 24 candidates underwent a rigorous driving test, resulting in the final selection of 11 drivers. Six of them hold heavy vehicle licenses, making them eligible for the training program.
Under the guidance of transport officers and KSRTC's first woman driver, V P Sheela, all the selected candidates, including those with light motor vehicle licenses, will go through multiple phases of training. The first phase comprises theory classes and road-driving sessions along various city routes. In the subsequent phase, the candidates will gain hands-on experience with the K-SWIFT electric buses, further honing their skills and familiarity with the specific vehicle model.
This recruitment and training initiative by KSRTC marks a significant milestone in promoting gender inclusivity and empowering women in the field of transportation. By providing opportunities for women to drive heavy vehicles, KSRTC is not only challenging stereotypes but also promoting diversity and equality in the workforce.
The presence of these skilled women drivers in the KSRTC fleet will not only enhance the corporation's operational capabilities but also serve as an inspiration for other women aspiring to pursue careers in traditionally male-dominated industries. KSRTC's commitment to gender equality and women's empowerment sets a progressive example for other transportation organizations to follow.
As the training progresses, these women drivers will undoubtedly inspire others with their determination, skill, and passion for challenging societal norms, ultimately paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable future in the transportation sector.
