The Kerala Women's League (KWL), which was put on hold seven years ago due to a lack of sponsorship and support, is ready to resurface thanks to a partnership between the Kerala Football Association (KFA) and Scoreline Sports Private Limited of the Meeran Group.
The event, which will feature six teams and 30 matches in a double-leg format, will begin on December 11 at the floodlit stadium in Thrissur. A celebrity women's football match will precede it. Reema Kallingal and Malavika Jayaram, among others, are expected to take part in the match, which will take place on Friday at the Kadavanthra Regional Sports Centre.
The Gokulam FC women's team, who won the previous season, is one of the teams competing in the KWL. Gokulam FC's better talent, according to KFA president Tom Jose, does not have to mean a one-sided competition because teams might surprise.
“The winners can participate in next year’s India Women’s League and bag a cash prize of ₹1 lakh, while the runners-up will get ₹50,000. We want to gradually increase the number of teams while ensuring quality. We will have to give the women’s game the importance it deserves for improvement. The league will also give a fresh lease of life to officials and others associated with the game,” he said.
Scoreline Sports will oversee the league's promotional and commercial components, including match telecast, while the KFA will handle the official conduct and scheduling of matches. It will be the only live webcast of a women's league.
“We are delighted to be associated with the rejuvenation of the KWL and are looking at a long-term collaboration with the KFA. We aim at creating a congenial atmosphere for encouraging more women to take up sports by organising more matches and creating awareness,” said Minna Jayesh, director of Scoreline Sports Private Limited.
Matches in the KWL will be place on different days. On January 24, the league will come to an end.
