Justice Sunita Agarwal Sworn In as 29th Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court

Justice Sunita Agarwal has sworn her oath as the 29th Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court on Sunday. She is the only female Chief Justice of a High Court in India. The ceremony of taking the oath as Chief Justice of Gujarat was held at Gandhinagar's Raj Bhavan where Governor Acharya Devvrat performed the official oath of office.
Major dignitaries including CM Bhupendra Patel, Shankar Chaudhary, the speaker of the Gujarat Assembly, and Rushikesh Patel, the Minister of Law and Justice marked their presence at the event.
The Gujarat High Court's second female Chief Justice is Justice Sunita Agarwal. She served as a judge at the Allahabad High Court before securing this position. On July 5, 2023, the Supreme Court collegium proposed Justice Sunita Agarwal's appointment as Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court.
Justice Sonia Gokani held the position of Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court for a brief period from February 2023 until she got retired before Justice Sunita Agarwal's appointment. During the period she got retired to the new appointment, the interim Chief Justice was Justice AJ Desai who is now appointed as the Chief Justice of the Kerela High Court.
