Indian Women Shine at FISU World University Games with a Spate of Medals

Indian archer Avneet Kaur won the gold in women’s singles compound archery by defeating US’S Alyssa Sturgill in the FISU World University Games on Monday.

Scores were tied at 144-144, after which a shoot-off took place at the Modern Pentathlon Center Equestrian Arena Final Field. Avneet won the game with a score of 10-8.

Earlier on Sunday, the compound mixed archery team of Aman Saini and Pragati had clinched a gold medal.

Manu Bhaker, an Indian shooter won two gold medals on the inaugral day of the FISU World University Games 2023 being held in Chengdu, the People’s Republic of China.

India closed with four medals - three golds and one bronze.

Olympian Manu Bhaker grabbed the women's 10m air pistol gold to score her individual medal. She then combined with Yashaswini Singh Deswal and Abhidnya Patil to win the gold medal in the 10m air pistol women's team event.

Another Indian shooter, Elavenil Valarivan, won a gold medal in the women's 10m air rifle event. Indian judoka Yamini Mourya won a bronze medal in the women's 57kg category.

“The qualification is one game and the final is another. I just put the qualification aside and then go to the final. For me, they are completely two different matches. I definitely feel very good, and I'm very impressed by the medal,” Manu Bhaker said.

Close to 230 Indian athletes are competing at the Chengdu meet. The World University Games, which is held biennially, is one of the largest multi-sport events in the world.
