A report by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) shows that 86 per cent of Indian diabetics have experienced mental health issues due to their diabetes. The conditions are primarily driven by fear of complications, daily diabetes management, healthcare support, and access to medicines and supplies. The report highlights the need to prioritize mental well-being beyond blood sugar management to improve diabetics' quality of life.
Ahead of World Diabetes Day, the survey was conducted in seven countries, including India, Brazil, Indonesia, Pakistan, South Africa, Spain, and the US. The report revealed that 90 per cent of Indian women with diabetes experience mental health issues compared to 84 per cent of men primarily due to fear of complications (76 per cent), daily diabetes management (72 per cent), access to healthcare professionals (65 per cent), and accessing medicines and supplements (61 per cent). 85 per cent experienced diabetes burnout, leading to 73 per cent opting for treatment interruptions due to stress whereas 80 per cent mentioned increased emotional support from healthcare providers. Additionally, 77 per cent of people on a global level experience anxiety, depression, and poor mental health due to diabetes. The report highlights the need to improve diabetics' mental well-being beyond blood sugar management.
President of the International Diabetes Federation, Prof Peter Schwarz mentions, "While diabetes affects both physical and mental well-being, care often focuses only on blood sugar management, leaving many overwhelmed."
