The 2023 elections in Mizoram have seen the highest participation of female candidates in history. A total of 16 women candidates will take part in the upcoming assembly polls.
The state of Mizoram was formed in 1986 and since then it has witnessed only four female MLAs as this year, it will be the highest participation of women in the electoral contest in 36 years of the state's existence.
The Mizoram General Elections will be held from 7 November 2023 in which 174 nominations have been filed so far. 27 independent candidates have also registered their nominations along with the major political parties in the 40-member assembly house.
The female candidates are from major political parties like MNF, ZPM, Mizoram Congress, and also from independent fields in the total 16 women candidate registrations.
The MNF candidate, Prova Chakma hails from West Tuipui. She mentions that Mizoram is a patriarchal state but women have always received the privilege of the decision-making process. According to her, female participation is still less compared to other states but things are changing with time as it will pave the way for equal women participation.
The two strong political parties in Mizoram, ZPM and MNF both have nominated 2 women candidates each in the upcoming elections.
