Guwahati Hosts Workshop on Women's Empowerment through Poultry Farming

In Guwahati, Assam, a session on women's empowerment through poultry farming was recently organised.

The session, "Empowering Women through Capacity Building in Good Poultry Farm Management," took place in Guwahati at the Directorate of Extension Education of Assam Agriculture University.

The national commission for women in New Delhi supported the workshop/training session.

Dr Atul Borgohain, Associate Director of Extension Education, Assam Agricultural University (AAU), Khanapara Campus in Guwahati, led the event from May 9 to 13.

A total of 30 women farmers from Assam's Morigaon district took part in the programme, which featured lectures, field visits, and practical demonstrations on various aspects of poultry farming and business start-up from 18 resource persons from the College of Veterinary Science, University of Science and Technology Meghalaya, financial institutions such as State Bank of India, and Assam Livestock and Poultry Corporation Limited, Guwahati.

Participants were escorted to ALPCO in Guwahati for an orientation and to the college's chicken product processing plant for hands-on practise.

The Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Dr. BN Saikia, Joint Registrar, AAU, and Guest of Honour, Dr. BK Sarmah, officially opened the event.

Dr. Atul Borgohain, Associate Director of AAU Extension Education, presided over the meeting. The Course Director was Dr. Reema Saikia of the Department of Poultry Science, and the Course Coordinators were Dr. Leema Bora and Dr. S. Payeng of the Department of Extension Education, College of Veterinary Science, Assam Agricultural University, Khanapara.

Dr. Saikia encouraged the participants to utilise the programme as an opportunity to learn and realise their potential to supplement their family's income through chicken farming.

He also underlined the need for women to take the lead in the development of entrepreneurship and revenue generation.

The Dean also issued an Extension Bulletin on "Poultry-based livestock management practises," which was distributed to farmers.

The Valedictory function was marked with an overview of the event by the course Director, feedback from participants and Certificate distribution.

The farmers expressed their satisfaction on the training programme and requested for more similar trainings in future.
