The WiSci (Women in Science) South Asia STEAM Camp, organized by Girl Up and the US Department of State's Office of Global Partnerships, attracted nearly 100 schoolgirls from India, Bangladesh, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States to promote STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and design, and mathematics) education and gender equality. The event was organized from 2 June to 8 June 2024 in Kochi, India.
The WiSci Girls' STEAM camp aimed to equip young girls with skills, workshops, hands-on activities, interactive discussions along with industry experts, and confidence in science and technology, focusing on climate science, women's representation in aviation, and artificial intelligence. Dorothy McAuliffe, US State Department Special Representative for Global Partnerships, underscored the importance of investing in girls' education and leadership development for global economic empowerment.
WiSci STEAM Camps have trained over 1,100 girls and youth allies globally since 2015, providing career guidance and cross-cultural connections, and fostering lifelong positive impact. Melissa Kilby, CEO of Girl Up mentioned, "We are thrilled to have brought the WiSci Girls' STEAM Camp to India, providing these bold, brilliant girls from South Asia with a new platform to explore their passion in STEAM. This camp embodies our collective commitment to engaging young women in STEAM and equipping them with skills and confidence to thrive in this rapidly evolving era of science and technology.
