The FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) has trained 22 South African women to fabricate and install solar panels and lights, partnering with Barefoot College in Rajasthan. The training equips women with technical skills for solar panels, home lighting systems, street lights, mini and microgrids, and photovoltaic circuits. The women, now known as 'Solar Mamas,' will return to their communities to contribute to sustainable development and gender equality. The initiative aims to improve energy infrastructure and support sustainable development.
FICCI FLO National President Joyshree Das Verma highlights collaborative efforts within the organization, government, and other countries to foster leadership and growth opportunities for women in diverse sectors, including the solar energy sector.
Ms. Sudha Shivkumar, the immediate past president of FLO, initiated, conceptualized, and implemented the training program. In August 2023, Sudha led a delegation to South Africa, participating in various events. FLO participated in the BRICS Women's Business Alliance Annual Meeting, BRICS-Africa Trade Conference, and BRICS Business Forum. The South African government sponsored a group of women to receive Solar Mama training at Barefoot College in India, equipping them with technical expertise to harness solar energy. Ms. Sudha emphasized the need for such a program during an interaction with South Africa's Minister of Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities.
