The State Bank of India (SBI) has recently published a study on Indian voters according to their gender. The study suggests that women will vote more frequently in India than men by the 2029 elections. A total voter turnout has been recorded at approximately 68 crores as predicted by SBI research for the upcoming general elections in 2024. Out of these, 33 crore or 49 per cent are estimated to be female voters.
The next general elections will be executed in 2029 where the study suggests, female voters reach 37 crores and men voters reach 36 crores, making a significant rise and surpassing the male voters in India. According to additional predictions, women's voting turnout may rise to 55 per cent by 2047 while men's turnout may decline to 45 per cent.
Previous records suggest that in 1951, there were just 8 crore voters in India. The number of voter turnout increased to 42 crores by the 2009 elections, with 19 crores female.
In the state assembly elections, there has been a significant rise in the number of women voting. They have cast their votes more than men in 18 states over the last five years. Additionally, in ten states where women voted more than men, the same government was re-elected. Despite Female voters casting the majority of votes in India, they are still underrepresented making up to 15 per cent of the 17th Lok Sabha members. In other regions such as Sweden, Norway, and South Africa, women make up more than 45 per cent of the national legislature closing the gender disparity.
