The Pahle India Foundation (PIF) report highlights the significant role of online e-commerce in job creation in India, with e-commerce platforms creating around 15.8 million jobs, and 3.5 million women employed. The digital economy empowers women, providing new economic opportunities in sectors like logistics and entrepreneurship. It showcases India's digital transformation as a key driver of economic growth.
The PIF report released by Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal mentioned that 1.76 million retail enterprises in India are participating in e-commerce, with tier 3 city consumers spending more than Rs 5,000 per month on online shopping. The report 'Assessing the Net Impact of E-commerce on Employment and Consumer Welfare in India' reveals that online vendors in India employ 54 per cent more people and nearly twice as many female employees compared to offline platforms.
E-commerce is expanding into tier 3 cities, with an average of nine employees per e-commerce vendor, including two females. Offline vendors employ six, with only one female. Employment across skill levels has increased, and online vendors have seen improved business performance, including higher sales and profits.
Minister Piyush Goyal states "The growth of e-commerce should be citizen-centric and must democratize the distribution of benefits among the larger section of society in the country."
