Disha Women's Welfare Trust plans to hold mahila panchayats in Punjab districts to encourage rural women to make independent decisions about voting preferences, aiming to empower them and resist male influence in order to have their voices heard. On May 13, the Mahila panchayat with the theme, 'Jaag Bhaine Jaag (wake up sister)', will be organized in Mansa to promote women's independence while casting votes and increasing the voting percentage.
With the slogan "70 Paar," the trust is participating in Sveep initiatives managed by the Election Commission. The theme of the initiative is inspiring and potent as it will gradually encourage rural women to become conscious and participate in the electoral process. The Disha Women's Welfare Trust aims to empower rural women to vote by educating them about their rights and responsibilities, addressing the lack of awareness among women in rural areas, and also the influence of male family members.
Hardeep Kaur Virk, Trust President along with members Jeet Kaur Dahiya, Prof Ramandeep Kaur, Mamta Sharma, and Akanksha mentioned that they visited several villages and were astonished that many rural women do not have much idea about the electoral process, voting, and candidates. Trust officials stated, "They know that elections are being held but many of them were not even aware of the candidates contesting from their constituencies as their husbands, brothers, fathers, and in-laws make decisions about casting votes." Additionally, Hardeep Kaur Virk appointed Jeet Kaur Dahiya as the District President of Mansa and Akanksha as the District President of Bhatinda.
