Delhi Police's Tejaswini Scheme Caused 37 Percent Reduction in Street Crimes in Sensitive Areas

The Tejaswini scheme, a woman centric safety and empowerment initiative launched by the northwest district (Delhi) completed one year on Sunday. The Delhi Police announced that the Tejaswini scheme has helped reduce crime against women in the area. They mentioned that there was an overall 37 percent reduction in street crimes in sensitive areas of the Northwest district.
Speaking about the scheme’s success Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) UshaRangnanicommented that the "Tejaswinis" are showcasing excellent performance in the field and are delivering excellent results in containing crime and criminals.
52 women beat personnel who were deployed under the scheme have been instrumental in making 100 arrests, including molesters, bootleggers, robbers, snatchers and auto-lifters over the past year, said UshaRangani, DCP (northwest).
Launched on July 10, 2021, the Tejaswini scheme aims to lessen crimes, especially against women and children in the region. It was also aimed at instilling confidence among women living, working or commuting in the northwest district jurisdiction. 52 women beat personnel were selected and deployed in crime infested and sensitive areas of various police stations including JJ clusters of Jahangirpuri, Shakarpur and Pitampura residential areas, Bhalaswa village, market, mall complexes, metro stations, schools and colleges.Working alongside their male counterparts, these 52 Tejaswinis patrolled streets on scooters and bikes.
“In addition to their policing job, these personnel also counsel vulnerable girls, make them aware of cyber-crimes, and teach them self-defense tactics,” said the DCP. The northwest district is celebrating Tejaswini week to mark one year of the scheme, from July 11 to July 18. During the week awareness &sensitization and self-defenseprogrammes for young girls and women will be organized.
