CWG 2022: PV Sindhu, Manpreet Singh led Indian Contingent at Opening Ceremony

The Commonwealth Games 2022 opening ceremony was conducted on July 28 in Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. The Indian contingent at the opening ceremony was proudly led by Olympic medalist & ace shuttler, PV Sindhu and the men's hockey team captain Manpreet Singh.

Neeraj Chopra was the designated Indian flag bearer for opening ceremony, however he suffered an injury during the World Athletics Championships, where he won the silver medal. He has had to pull out of CWG 2022 due to the injury.

The Indian side will be represented by a total of 215 athletes. The Indian squad has some of the most sought after sports persons including names such as MirabaiChanu, LovlinaBorgohain, BajrangPunia and Ravi Kumar Dahiya. The Indian contingent also has CWG champions such as ManikaBatra, VineshPhogat, 2018 Asian Games Gold medalists,Tajinderpal Singh Toor, Hima Das and Amit Panghal. The athletes will partake in 141 events spread across 19 different sports.

This year will mark the debut of Women's T20I cricket at the Commonwealth Games. The top eight teams will compete for the gold medal. Indian women's cricket team will play their maiden CWG debut game against Australia on July 29. The women's hockey team will take on Ghana.

In the 2018 Commonwealth GamesIndia had won 66 medals in total. The country’s squad had best performed in 2010 Commonwealth Games where India athletes had won 101 medals, including 38 gold medals.
