China Challenges Important Recommendations for Women-led Development for India's G20 Priorities

China has opposed the important suggestions made by India regarding women-led development, one of India's six G20 priorities. "Quota-based" systems have been opposed by Beijing in particular. The suggestions were opposed during the discussions of the W20 (Women 20) engagement group under the G20, which have been taking place since February 2023. The W20 engagement group's function at the G20 is to facilitate discussions and agreement among participating nations on five key points that are, women in entrepreneurship, women in grassroots leadership, closing the gender digital divide, education and skill advancement, and women & and girls as change-makers in the society.
China put forward its concern on setting a minimum quota for public procurement for businesses that are led by women-owned with higher female representation.
The public sector purchases made from gender-inclusive businesses need to be increased, as opposed to China. The government must adhere to strict procedures to ensure fairness, efficiency, transparency, and responsible use of public resources in public procurement.
India has a strong emphasis on the participation of women in all areas of decision-making, including climate financing. China's concerns have implications for India's G20 priorities. Some crucial recommendations in this area might not be included in the final communique if certain aspects of women-led development are opposed. China has previously opposed Indian preferences while India has held the G20 presidency.
The G20 Summit will begin on September 9 and last for two days.
