The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation and an NGO have launched the 'Driving Naari' program, aiming to empower women from self-help groups (SHGs) by providing them with professional driving skills and employment opportunities. The program focuses on road safety rules, vehicle maintenance, and professional driving skills, enabling women to work in various sectors like cab services, private companies, and government transportation services.
The programs aim to empower underprivileged women to become professional drivers and provide them with remunerative, "livelihoods with dignity." Isha Kamboj, Joint Municipal Commissioner mentioned, "The partnership between NGO and MC Chandigarh will be unique convergence model, which will lay a new path helping the livelihood of urban women with weak financial background." Dr. Vivek Trivedi, social development officer at MC, praises ' Driving Naari' as an innovative social enterprise project empowering women to pursue driving careers, aiming to uplift their lives and enable them to earn their livelihood.
Women from Self-Help Groups are trained in driving which opens up new employment opportunities such as taxi services, delivery, and more. The initiative encourages women to acquire driving skills, promoting financial independence and gender equality by breaking gender stereotypes and encouraging them to take traditionally male-dominated roles.
