Captain Shiva Chouhan, a member of the Army's Fire and Fury Corps stationed in Ladakh, has started working at the Kumar Post near the Siachen Glacier, making her the first female officer to hold a position at what is regarded as the highest battleground in the entire globe.

Bengal Sapper Officer Capt. Chouhan, a native of Rajasthan, was commissioned into the Engineer Regiment in May 2021.

“I am extremely happy to see more women joining the Armed Forces and take every challenge in stride. It is an encouraging sign. My best wishes to Capt Shiva Chauhan,” tweeted defence minister Rajnath Singh.

After a challenging ascent, Capt. Chouhan was welcomed to the Siachen Glacier on January 2.

After the renowned Indian Army commander and mountaineer Colonel Narendra "Bull" Kumar, Kumar Post or Kumar Base, at 15,632 feet, serves as a battalion headquarters for the Northern Command and is situated 60 kilometres from the Siachen base near Indira Col.

She attended school in Udaipur and graduated from the NJR Institute of Technology in Udaipur with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. Her mother, a stay-at-home mother, took care of her academics when her father passed away when she was 11 years old.
