Demanding the university administration to ensure their safety at the hostel, where unidentified men trespass into it at night semi-naked, more than 100 girl students Of Bharathiar University staged a protest.
They said while they had made several representations, both the university administration and the hostel staff hadn’t done anything to address the issue so far.
One of the students, who didn’t want to be identified, said the hostel staff were dismissing the issue as a case of illusion. “Our safety is compromised at the hostel. The trespassers often flash us. And the staff are not believing us and telling us that it is our illusion.”
University vice-chancellor Dr P Kaliraj said they would take necessary steps to ensure the safety of girl students at the hostel. “It was only on Wednesday that I received a written complaint from the students regarding the issue. I have assured them that steps would be taken to prevent unauthorized people from entering the hostel premises.”
The vice-chancellor said they would appoint women security guards at the hostel soon. “Until then, women cops will be deployed at the hostel for night duty.” While the hostel premises are under the surveillance of CCTV cameras, some of the cameras are not working now as they were not in use during the lockdown. “We will repair the faulty cameras and beef up the surveillance by installing more CCTV cameras,” Kaliraj said.
