Rekha Gupta, the BJP's Chief Minister-elect of Delhi, is set to take the oath of office today on 20 February, alongside six cabinet ministers. This marks the party's return to power in the capital after nearly 27 years, with a grand swearing in ceremony planned at Ramlila Maidan.
Rekha will become the fourth woman to hold the Chief Minister's position in Delhi, following the path of Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, and Atishi. She secured a decisive victory in the Shalimar Bagh seat, defeating AAP's Bandana Kumari and Congress's Parveen Kumar Jain by a margin of 29,595 votes.
Rekha, a first-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh was chosen as BJP’s leader in the Delhi Assembly. She was appointed as legislature party leader 11 days after the election results and the Official announcement of her appointment was made on Wednesday evening.
The high-profile event will be graced by Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers from 20 states, as well as BJP leaders and workers who played a key role in the party's Delhi election campaign will also be included during the event.
Rekha's cabinet will feature six ministers and they are Manjinder Sirsa, Ashish Sood, Pankaj Kumar Singh, Ravinder Indraj Singh, Kapil Mishra, and Parvesh Verma. The BJP made a remarkable electoral comeback in the Delhi assembly polls earlier this month, winning 48 out of 70 seats.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had secured 62 seats in 2020, saw its strength reduced to just 22. AAP’s decade-long rule in Delhi came to an end amid serious corruption allegations against its leaders, including former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
