The government is claimed to have cleared all nine candidates submitted by the Supreme Court Collegium chaired by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana for appointment as Supreme Court justices.
Justice BV Nagarathna, one of the names on the list, may be on her way to becoming India's first female Chief Justice, thus making history. According to reports, the files have been handed to the President for additional processing. The Supreme Court will swear in the nine new judges early next week if everything goes according to schedule.
The nine names on the list include eight Supreme Court justices and one Supreme Court lawyer.
Justice Nagarathna; Kerala High Court judge Justice C.T. Ravikumar; Madras High Court judge Justice M.M. Sundresh; Gujarat High Court judge Justice Bela M. Trivedi; and senior attorney P.S. Nair are among them.
The Collegium is made up of Justices U.U. Lalit, A.M. Khanwilkar, D.Y. Chandrachud, and Justice L. Nageswara.
The Collegium recommended three female judges in a single resolution for the first time. It also sends a powerful statement in favour of female representation in the highest courts.
Mrs. Justice B.V.Nagarathna is an Indian judge who sits on the Karnataka High Court. E.S. Venkataramiah, the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, is her father. After being violently held by a group of protesting lawyers on the grounds of the Karnataka High Court in 2009, she became well-known. In Karnataka, she has issued a number of noteworthy judgments in the areas of commercial and constitutional law.
B V Nagarathna, could become the country's first female Chief Justice in 2027 if she is upgraded.
According to reports, the Collegium's initial candidate for direct elevation to the Supreme Court is senior counsel PS Narsimha. Justice Rohinton F Nariman, the first sixth lawyer in India's legal history to be directly appointed from the bar, retired less than a week ago, prompting his suggestion.
