Tech giant Apple has announced plans to build hostel facilities for 100,000 women workers across India with the aim to offer safe and comfortable accommodation for women working in Apple's supply chain. Being established under the public-private partnership (PPP) women employees working in its factories will be provided a decent hostel to stay. The hostels will be ready by the end of the financial year 2024-25 comprising housing models similar to China and Vietnam ensuring efficiency and safety for women's accomodation.
The Apple-built hostel for women accommodation across India will be the largest set of hostel facilities in India's industrial history so far. The company has been working with the state governments and private sectors across the states where the hostels will be established. In addition to this, the Apple ecosystem will directly employ 200,000 workers as stated earlier by the company. It has so far hired 175,000 and aims to complete its target by the end of this financial year.
Apple has recruited over 70 per cent of young women employees in the age group of 18 years to 24 years. Around 80,000 employees have been hired at 3 iPhone production units of Foxconn and Pegatron in Tamil Nadu and Tata Electronics in Karnataka.
Additionally, Apple's key vendor, Tata Electronics will establish 40,000 units for women worker's accommodation from other states near Hosur, Tamil Nadu which will be built near its twin factories. The first factory manufactures mechanics for iPhones that comprises over 15,000 workers whereas the second factory is expected to hire 40,000 workers who will manufacture iPhones.
Salcomp, Apple's second vendor will occupy 4,000 housing units for their women workers accommodation which manufactures power adaptors, enclosures, and magnetics for Apple.
