The 2024 Indian Lok Sabha elections saw a 65.8 per cent voter turnout out of the country's 97.6 crore electorates, a 1.6 per cent decrease from the 67.1 per cent recorded votes in the 2019 elections. However, a higher participation rate of women outnumbered men in 19 out of 36 states and Union Territories (UTs), but men had a polling percentage of 65.8 per cent at the national level. The release of turnout data coincided with the Election Commission requesting the release of the 18th Lok Sabha list. This indicates a growing political consciousness and a desire to influence governance and policy decisions.
The Election Commission released turnout data for the 2024 general election that comprised a bench of delegates including Rajiv Kumar Chief Election Commissioner and Gyanesh Kumar & Sukhbir Singh Sandhu Election Commissioners, requesting President Droupadi Murmu to submit a notification containing the 18th Lok Sabha list and dedicating the violence-free polls to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.
The EC has resisted attempts to vitiate the electoral process, resulting in higher female voter turnout in 204 parliamentary constituencies for the 2024 general election. The last three phases saw 64.7 per cent female voting percentage, surpassing 63.1 per cent among male electors. 19 states and UTs also saw higher female voter turnout. Lakshadweep had the highest voter turnout at 84.2 per cent, followed by Assam at 81.6 per cent, Tripura at 80.9 per cent, and Andhra Pradesh at 80.7 per cent, while Bihar had the lowest at 56.2 per cent, followed by Mizoram at 56.9 per cent and UP at 56.9 per cent.
