In the 2022 midterm elections in the United States, Muslim woman of Indian descent Nabeela Syed, age 23, won a seat in the Illinois General Assembly.
On November 8th, Democratic candidate Nabeela defeated Republican incumbent Chris Bos.
"My name is Nabeela Syed. I’m a 23-year-old Muslim, Indian-American woman. We just flipped a Republican-held suburban district. And in January, I’ll be the youngest member of the Illinois General Assembly," Nabeela Syed.
Syed had previously defeated Chelsea Laiberte Barnes in the Democratic primary election conducted in June.
Nabeela, who was up in Palatine, Illinois, is a political science and business graduate of the University of California, Berkeley.
Syed is an active member of the Islamic Society of Northwest Suburbs, where she works for interfaith understanding and seeks to empower young Muslim women to take on leadership roles.
According to her website, Nabeela has collaborated with a number of organisations, such as EMILY's List, to raise money to elect Democrats to Congress.
She presided over a nonprofit consulting firm that assisted neighbourhood businesses.
She is currently employed by a non-profit where she supports various civic engagement initiatives using digital strategy, such as mobilising voters, preventing sexual assault on college campuses, and advancing gender parity.
Nabeela affirms that she would fight for the matters that are most crucial to the neighbourhood, such as healthcare, education, taxation, and equal rights.
In the 2022 midterm elections, a number of Indian American candidates were elected to important posts. There are currently five representatives of Indian descent in the US House of Representatives.
Shri Thanedar was elected from Michigan's thirteenth Congressional District, replacing Ami Bera, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ro Khanna, and Pramila Jayapal in their respective seats.
The so-called "Samosa Caucus of Indian Americans" is made up of five Democratic party members.
Along with Governor Wes Moore, Democrat Aruna Miller was chosen as the lieutenant governor of Maryland.
