The two-day conference titled "Understanding Structural Violence Against Women in Farm Suicide-Affected Regions in India" gathered nine women farmers from various states to discuss their struggles. The women farmers from different states came together at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), where Jyoti Tambare shared that she lost her farm-laborer husband to suicide and was excluded from government compensation due to lack of official records
The conference aims to develop policy recommendations and foster dialogue with the government to address farmers' challenges, highlighting resilience stories like Srilatha J's successful land acquisition and debt settlement. The conference was organized by the welfare organizations like Mahila Kisan Adhikaar Manch (Makaam), Network of Rural and Agrarian Studies (NRAS), KSP and CPPD (SPPU), and Society for Promoting Participate Ecosystem Management (SOPPECOM). The event seeks to highlight the difficulties faced by women in farm suicide-affected families, propose policy solutions, and promote government dialogue to tackle these issues.
The conference mentioned policy recommendations for women farmers, including land ownership rights, financial inclusion, social support systems, gender-responsive policies, and improved data collection and documentation. These include promoting financial literacy, establishing support networks, addressing mental health challenges, and addressing specific needs.
