Over my professional journey, I've cultivated a versatile skill set through diverse industries. Starting in advertising, I quickly adapted to decode various sectors, mastering financial, market, and technical intricacies. Transitioning to multinational corporations, I navigated multicultural dynamics, managing brands across the Asia Pacific. Shifting to a family-run business, I overcame gender stereotypes, reshaping the company's trajectory. Engaging with factory workers, I became a mentor for micro-industries, understanding their needs. This unique trajectory, from advertising to MNCs to family businesses, has moulded me into an adaptable leader. Currently focused on public sector units, my varied experiences set me apart in handling distinct customer interactions.

Tell us about the role played by BITS Pilani in shaping you as an individual and as a professional.

BITS Pilani has played a transformative role in sculpting both my personal and professional facets. The vast exposure provided has instilled in me an unwavering confidence to confront and conquer challenges. Beyond academics, the ethos of the institute emphasizes holistic leadership. Engaging in extracurricular activities like being part of the Art and Deco team for the Oasis cultural festival and managing events as the secretary of the Management Association honed my skills in team leadership, event management, and speaker engagement. Working at the student cooperative society, I learned stock-keeping, financial management, and a touch of entrepreneurship. The diverse interactions within the BITS community enriched my communication skills. In essence, BITS Pilani has been the crucible where I forged not just academic brilliance but a comprehensive skill set essential for navigating the complexities of the professional world.

Introduce us to Iyappan Engineering Industries. What are the various responsibilities you shoulder as the Director of the firm?

Iyappan Engineering Industries, a stalwart in the manufacturing realm with a rich 50-year legacy, epitomizes a unique focus on import substitution products within the MSME domain. Pioneering indigenization for major players like BHEL, NTPC, and Defence our specialized niche lies in understanding and meeting the specific requirements of government sectors, as well as private Companies particularly in power plants and Defence sector. As the Director, my multifaceted role encompasses marketing, procurement, HR, and certification processes. Guided by a passion for import substitution instilled by the company's founders, we have strategically implemented modern systems and processes, transforming the organization's technological landscape. Stepping into the realm of brand strategy, We've shaped the company's strategic approach while excelling in negotiations, and customer relations, and fostering a cohesive team environment.

In your opinion what are some of the most critical challenges you encounter in your current role? What steps do you undertake to overcome these roadblocks?

Transitioning from an MNC to a male-dominated factory posed initial challenges. Overcoming skepticism required breaking down technical issues into logical parts, demonstrating that every problem has a viable solution. As the company shifted from handling public sector units to corporate clients, adapting our approach became pivotal. Training my team to navigate the nuances of a more professional environment was crucial. Implementing systems, processes, and ERP brought its set of challenges, met through comprehensive training initiatives. Mentoring micro-industries nationwide is both a challenge and a passion, contributing to the vision of elevating Indian MSMEs to global standards. Challenges are embraced, providing continuous motivation in a dynamic business landscape. Engaging with college students in entrepreneurship programs serves as both a stress buster and a learning experience, keeping me attuned to emerging ideas and technologies. In essence, challenges are not just roadblocks but stepping stones, fuelling continuous growth and innovation.

Throw light on the most critical professional milestone you have achieved over the years.

A defining professional milestone emerged when major corporates recognized our capabilities, transcending the typical MSME perception. Shifting from PSU collaborations, we showcased a level of professionalism that prompted corporates to reassess their expectations. The gratification comes from their acknowledgment, realizing we're not just a regular MSME but a highly professional entity. Another source of pride is witnessing the impact of motivational speeches on college students, seeing them implement ideas and launch startups. Empowering my team to excel and receiving gratitude for their success adds another layer of fulfilment. Finally, supplying to the defence sector fulfils a childhood aspiration, earning respect from uniformed personnel and validating our commitment to excellence.
