In an exclusive interview with Women Entrepreneur, Shikha shares more about her early experience and expertise, some of the major challenges she has faced so far and how does she overcome them, and much more.

Shed Some Light On Your Professional Background & Experience. How Has Been Your Journey So Far With D Ix Dimension & What Drives You Today As An Entrepreneur?

My journey as an interior design started in 1998 when I enrolled to study ‘Space Design’ at SNDT University, Mumbai. After completing my graduation, I started my personal practice in Jaipur in 2001. I slowly built a portfolio of clients while pursuing my master’s in Interior Design.

I have also served as a consultant for several design schools across the city and nation to help them with curriculum, operations, and academia. Some of the renowned schools which I helped set up include Poornima University’s School of Design and Arts, and Gurukul School of Design. With years of experience and expertise, now I am also serving as a member of the managing committee of Institute of Indian Interior Designers- Jaipur Chapter (IIID-JRC), as well as the treasurer for the Jaipur chapter of Association of Designers of India (ADI Jaipur).

Being a woman from a non-design background, I faced various social challenges while wanting to incorporate D IX Dimension. I always wanted to venture out on my own, and D IX Dimension gave me the opportunity to be experimental in my approach and create out-of-the-box designs.

Even though we work as a united team at D IX Dimension, I still am the face of the company. I oversee business management as well as creative strategy for our clients. I meet with clients whenever required to understand their requirements and pain points to be able to develop a customized solution that satisfies their design needs. I also oversee ideation, project execution, site workflow, material selection and quality checks. The biggest challenge that I have faced being an entrepreneur is surviving the pandemic. The economy is still in a flux post COVID and to counter it, I, along with my team, have devised a flexible design approach to ensure that our design solutions match with the client’s budget and expectation.

How Do You Foresee The Indian Interior Design Landscape Evolving In The Near Future? What Steps Do You Take To Keep Yourself Aligned With These Evolutions?

Over the past decade, the Interior Design market in India has been evolving at a great scale. Not only the metros, but also the people in the smaller Indian towns are now realizing the importance of practical yet aesthetic design in their living spaces. With the increase in sky rise apartments with smaller spaces, the prospects for designers are growing multi-folds. Smart design is the need of the hour, and we at D IX Dimension have built expertise in just that.
