Sarah Abudawood
Founder & CEO, Yataghan Jewellery
In a world where businesses often lean toward the pursuit of profit, a few exceptional brands rise above, driven by a deeper purpose. Yataghan Jewellery, under the visionary leadership of Sarah Abudawood, is one such beacon of purpose and values. Here, the craft of jewellery transcends mere adornment, becoming a medium for storytelling, where elegance meets minimalism, and tradition blends with modernity.
Yataghan does more than create beautiful pieces; it captures the soul of heritage while setting bold new trends in contemporary design. Each piece reflects a rich cultural narrative, earning Yataghan the prestigious title of "Jewelry Brand of the Year" by the Saudi Fashion Commission, a testament to its unique place in the industry. Sarah’s background in architectural photography deeply influences her design philosophy, blending minimalist modern architecture with the intricate details of Saudi heritage. Her designs fuse cultural motifs, such as calligraphy and geometric patterns, reimagined through modern techniques. This approach aims to both honor and challenge traditional narratives.
Sarah's commitment to social responsibility is woven into her brand. She champions women’s health, advocates for empowerment, and invests in the development of future leaders. Women Entrepreneur Review is privileged to interview Sarah.

What led you to establish Yataghan Jewelry? Can you tell us about the underlying idea behind the brand?
The idea for Yataghan Jewellery was born from a deep-seated desire to craft pieces that resonate with cultural and personal significance. As someone who has always valued the art of gifting, I recognized a gap in the market: a lack of jewellery that truly captured the essence of both the giver and recipient, blending taste with design aesthetics. I saw a void for creations rooted in rich cultural heritage, yet embracing the elegance of modern minimalism. Yataghan is also a tribute to my late mother, a woman with a passion for celebrating life and the beauty it had to offer. She had a deep love for fine jewellery and jewellery design. She was extraordinary, and through this brand, I continuously seek to honor her vivacious feminine spirit and love for life. At Yataghan, it is central to our craft to create jewellery with the timeless allure that carries stories across generations and becomes cherished heirlooms. As an introvert, designing jewellery has become my voice, a precious medium by which I share my experiences and connect with the world. In 2014, Yataghan Jewellery became one of the pioneers in Saudi Arabia to offer fine jewellery online, making high-quality and original designs accessible to all. Through the Saudi 100 Brands program, led by the Saudi Fashion Commission, Yataghan is now expanding internationally, and I feel a profound responsibility to use this platform for positive change.
The Yataghan Lab supports emerging designers, providing them with the resources and mentorship they need to begin their own creative journeys. Giving back to the community is a core value for me. Yataghan continuously strives to nurture new designers and collaborates annually with local foundations that serve the community, such as Zahra Breast Cancer Foundation.
What is the most important professional milestone you have achieved?
The most meaningful milestone lies in the path we continuously carve for future women entrepreneurs, leading by example and pioneering in a long male dominated industry.
Becoming one of the leading women-led jewellery brands in Saudi Arabia and the GCC is a notable achievement, but the true essence of my success is found in inspiring women to rise and pursue their aspirations. The joy that comes from speaking with young, aspiring students is deeply fulfilling. Their curious minds and positive feedback serve as a gentle reminder of the positive impact we’re making. Design is the art of weaving whispers of the past with the pulse of the present, creating pieces that linger in the soul. Each creation is a silent dialogue between tradition and innovation, a testament to the beauty of balance and the power of storytelling through form
Could you elaborate on the sustainable and ethical practices Yataghan has implemented, and how the brand is contributing to sustainability in the fashion industry?
We take great care to ensure that our diamonds are sourced responsibly, adhering to the Kimberley Process to guarantee they are conflict-free. In addition, we prioritize the use of recycled gold in our jewellery, significantly reducing the environmental impact of traditional mining methods. Our dedication to sustainability extends to our packaging, which is crafted from recycled materials, further minimizing our ecological footprint.
Through these conscious efforts, Yataghan embodies the principles of responsible luxury, contributing meaningfully to the global dialogue on sustainability in fashion. We believe that true beauty should honor both the planet and its people. By championing ethical practices, we hope to encourage a shift toward more mindful consumption, where luxury is defined by environmental stewardship and integrity. This philosophy allows us to create stunning jewellery that also embodies our unwavering commitment to a sustainable future.
How do you perceive your role in inspiring others, and what is your vision for shaping the future leaders of our nation?
Leadership for me is about empowering others. True role modeling extends beyond personal achievements; it’s about fostering belief in others and guiding them to pursue their own aspirations with confidence and determination. In this way, I see leadership as a role of inspiration, illuminating the path for future generations to follow and achieve greatness.
What advice would you offer to someone embarking on their entrepreneurial journey?
Approach your journey with passion and authenticity, commit to your work with integrity, and embrace mistakes as opportunities for growth. Balance creativity with practicality. Above all, trust yourself; your journey can inspire and uplift others. Lead generously, give back, and let your legacy be one of empowerment and transformative change.
What does the Yataghan sword symbolize to you personally?
The Yataghan sword, with its distinctive silhouette and exquisite craftsmanship, is a profound symbol. Adorned with the finest jewels and inscribed with Arabic poetry, its unique form is both striking and deeply meaningful. To me, the sword represents balance, serving both as a tool of protection and a weapon of defense, reflecting the dual aspects of equilibrium we strive for in our daily lives. It also embodies my culture, as symbolized by the two swords on the Saudi flag. In both my professional and personal designs, I aim to encapsulate this essence of balance. This universal pursuit resonates deeply with my clients and reflects my own journey of self-discovery through design.
How do you maintain a balance between minimalist design and rich heritage?
Achieving a balance between minimalist design and rich heritage involves weaving modernity into my country’s cultural legacy. The contrasting elements create a harmonious design that reflects both my personal journey and the essence of my brand.
Authenticity is key; when you embrace and express your true self, your design philosophy becomes a unique DNA that is distinct to both you and your brand. Jewellery, in this sense, transcends its material form; it becomes a narrative and a conversation, where the brand’s true value emerges and resonates with those who encounter it.
