What were some of the key turning points in your professional journey?
A significant turning point in my life came when I got married to Sajan Varghese, a renowned businessman, producer of blockbuster movies, and a pioneer in the flight catering business. This marriage introduced me to the flight catering industry. Starting without any background in this field, I took on the challenge, beginning as an accountant in SAJ Flight Services Pvt Ltd and eventually mastering various aspects of the business. This experience taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of continuous learning.
Another pivotal moment was diversifying the company into the hotels and resorts segment. Transitioning from flight catering to this new division initially felt challenging, but I saw it as an opportunity to apply my skills in a different environment. I adapted my knowledge of food safety and quality control to hotel operations, revisiting textbooks on hotel management to fill any knowledge gaps. Immersing myself in the details allowed me to develop effective strategies, make informed decisions, and earn my team's respect.
The Covid-19 pandemic was another critical juncture, bringing the hospitality industry to a standstill. Despite the uncertainty, I focused on adapting to the new reality, promoting our resorts as safe destinations with unique offers. This strategy successfully attracted domestic tourists, ensuring our business's survival and growth. Additionally, abrupt shifts in government policies required swift adaptation, often disrupting our plans and necessitating quick responses. By continuously learning and adapting to new circumstances, I managed to steer the company through significant transitions. This experience reinforced my belief in the importance of resilience and innovation in leadership, enabling us to navigate through crises and emerge stronger, ready to embrace future opportunities.

What are the key areas of expertise you have developed as a business leader over the years? How has your diverse experience enhanced your leadership abilities?
My initial banking experience and continuous self-study, along with guidance from my husband, have honed my financial management skills. Additionally, my expertise spans food safety, operational efficiency, crisis management, and innovative strategies. These competencies have shaped me into a well-rounded business leader. I pride myself on my leadership and crisis management abilities, believing that a leader should offer clear answers and swift solutions to team challenges. I often see myself as a go-to resource, much like a Google or AI advisor, adept at solving complex problems efficiently.
In times of crisis, my ability to remain composed and provide decisive guidance has proven invaluable. By leveraging my diverse skill set and knowledge base, I can address various issues that arise, ensuring smooth operations and continuous improvement. My commitment to innovation and efficiency drives me to constantly seek out new strategies and methodologies, keeping the business adaptable and forward-thinking. This holistic approach to leadership, combining financial acumen, operational expertise, and a problem-solving mindset, allows me to navigate the complexities of the business world effectively and inspire confidence in my team.
Please introduce us to SAJ Group of Hotels & Resorts and describe the various responsibilities you manage as the CEO.
SAJ Group of Hotels & Resorts offers a diverse portfolio in Kerala, including SAJ Earth Resort, a 5-star luxury destination near Cochin International Airport; SAJ Vagamon Hideout, a serene retreat in Vagamon, known as “miniature Switzerland”; and SAJ Luciya, a business hotel in Trivandrum’s city center. As CEO, my responsibilities include strategic planning and marketing to enhance brand visibility, financial management, operational oversight with crisis management, HR planning, and establishing reporting structures to address guest issues promptly. These efforts ensure operational efficiency and effective communication across the organization. By focusing on these key areas, I aim to elevate the guest experience, drive the company's growth, and maintain our reputation for excellence in the hospitality industry, ensuring each property meets the highest standards of service and quality.
What are some of the critical challenges you face in your current role, and what steps do you take to overcome these obstacles?
Navigating industry disruptions is a significant challenge in the hospitality industry, whether due to economic shifts, new regulations, or evolving consumer preferences. To address these, I stay ahead of industry trends through continuous market research and strategic forecasting. Managing a diverse portfolio of properties requires balancing operational efficiency with personalized guest experiences, achieved by focusing on training and empowering our staff. Attracting and retaining talent is also critical, given the fierce competition for skilled professionals. I create a compelling work environment that offers growth opportunities and recognizes employee contributions. Ensuring that each guest’s experience exceeds expectations is a continuous challenge, met by paying meticulous attention to detail and consistently seeking feedback for improvements.
What have been your key success principles over the years?
Adaptability has allowed me to turn obstacles into opportunities by embracing new circumstances with flexibility. Committing to continuous learning keeps me informed about industry trends and best practices. My strategic vision guides the organization toward sustained growth and success. Resilience helps me overcome setbacks and pursue new milestones. Trusting my employees and empowering them to take ownership, along with valuing the advice of my experienced mentor, has been fundamental. These principles have underpinned my career achievements, driving both personal growth and organizational success.
How do you anticipate the representation of women leaders evolving in the Indian hospitality industry in the future?

Advice for aspiring women entrepreneurs and business leaders: I recommend conducting in-depth market research to select a business area that matches your strengths and passions. Identify your unique niche and utilize your distinct skills and insights. Building a robust support network is also crucial. Stay flexible and embrace continuous learning, as the business world is always evolving. Being able to pivot and innovate will keep you ahead. Lastly, strive for a balance between your professional and personal life, as your well-being is key to achieving long-term success.

With an M.Sc degree and certifications in Food Safety Management from Dubai and the Center for Public Health and Food Safety in India, as well as in Baking and Pastry, Mini brings extensive expertise to her role. Since 2019, she has been serving as an independent Director of the Lakshadweep Tourism Development Corporation Ltd., Government of India, and holds Directorships at SAJ Holdings Pvt. Ltd, Southern Chef Flight Catering Pvt. Ltd, and Kanichai Hotels Pvt. Ltd.
