Marina Khalil: Setting New Benchmarks In Dubai's Interior Design Industry

The ancient construction methods used in the Pyramids of Giza are still debated. However, imagine the first moment of thought when they realized the ugly-looking stones and rocks could be made into something marvelous. It must have been surreal. After 4000 years, the inspiration that drives Marina Khalil, Founder of MK Design, one of Dubai’s finest interior design firms, is not far off. In truth, throughout her childhood, Marina was always drawn to design, art, and beauty. For her, transforming something unattractive into something beautiful has always been a powerful process imbued with creativity, around objects, spaces, and designs, and the unique angle from which she approaches them. Below is an excerpt fromWER’s exclusive interview with Marina, wherein she talks about her journey, inspirations, family, and much more.

You started your career as a tutor at NDU University. What was the motivation behind this?

Throughout my journey, I have always believed in bridging academic knowledge with practical experience. As an instructor at NDU University, I focused on integrating business principles into design education, offering the first course on the business of design. Academic excellence alone is insufficient in interior design. Practical, on-site experience is essential for a comprehensive understanding of the field. Connecting theoretical knowledge with practical application helps students build a complete portfolio and gain a deeper insight into the design process. This approach revealed that some students were more inclined towards business development within the design industry, while others were more focused on the creative aspects of interior design. Design encompasses much more than just aesthetics, it involves understanding technical requirements, client needs, and the end-user experience, in short, a holistic view of the space, addressing both functional and aesthetic needs to meet client expectations and create standout designs.

Tell us about your evolution from a tutor and interior design-based TV show presenter to establishing MK Design and becoming a business leader. What was the turning point?

In my younger years, I never took no for an answer and never stopped until something was done. This drive was my primary motivation. However, I have since learned that when dealing with unyielding clients or end users, it is sometimes best to give them what they want and move on.

What was your inspiration for starting your own design venture? What has that inspiration transpired into today?

I have always been rebellious, unable to take orders or instructions from others. Early in my career, I worked for a company for a few years, but I felt I had more to offer than just being a follower. This drive to leave my mark has been with me since childhood. Even when my mother said no, I needed a reason beyond "because I said so". So, that’s been my biggest motivation to start my own venture. Even today, I believe in open communication and collaboration. My team and I often argue and debate, much like siblings, because we spend so much time together that we become like family. I tell them that if I stop arguing with them, it means my mission is complete. Passion drives me, and I believe that without it, success is unattainable. Challenges will always arise, but they can be overcome with determination and a positive attitude. There will always be another opportunity, another client. It's important not to doubt yourself.

What is your biggest challenge, and how do you overcome it?

The biggest challenge for an interior designer is working with indecisive clients who are unsure of what they want, even when presented with options. This indecisiveness can be incredibly draining and can slow down the project, leading to a lack of progress and completion. Indecisive clients often have trust issues, which complicates the process further.

As I have evolved in my design journey, clients now seek me out for my unique style and signature approach. A pivotal moment in my career was realizing how my work significantly impacts the lives of others. Designing spaces is not just about completing a project, it involves changing how people live, from how they sit and eat to how they interact with their environment.

I remember the exact moment this realization hit me. I was in Paris. While sitting on a bench across the street from Le Victor Hugo with a coffee in my hand, my mind wandered around and started to observe the bustling life around me. It quickly hit me that design is fundamentally about people. Understanding the end user is crucial for creativity. A successful project is a collaborative journey between the designer and the client. Clients who trust and support their designers can push the boundaries of creativity. Each project is unique, and the designer's adventure evolves with each new challenge. The greatest pitfall for a designer is stagnation, so one must always keep moving forward.

Each Project Is Unique & The Designer's Adventure Evolves With Each New Challenge

As a designer, it's crucial to help clients reach decisions by providing support and guidance. Many clients are unaware of their indecisiveness, especially if it's their first time undertaking such a project. They often need your help to discover their preferences. It requires patience and understanding, as you guide clients through their indecision. This process can be taxing, and sometimes you need to take care of your own well-being to maintain a positive outlook. It's a comprehensive process that demands both professional and emotional investment.

What are the areas that MK Designs focuses on today?

We are selective about the projects we take on, focusing primarily on F&B (Food and Beverage) and hospitality projects. These projects are highly visible and accessible to the public, which I find rewarding. This domain is my area of expertise, and I thoroughly enjoy it. I also love designing homes, particularly in styles that resonate with us, which is modern, contemporary, and eclectic. On the other hand, we are also working toward realizing my dream of having an office in Italy and expanding our operations there.

What are the other plans or latest design trends you are adhering to that are in tune with the market trends?

Technology is invading everywhere, and its integration into designs is essential. The evolution of technology in our lives, from cars to home systems, has significantly influenced design. This technological evolution impacts our design schemes, such as how kitchens have become integral parts of living spaces, reflecting our changing lifestyles.

Homes and restaurants are reflections of our lifestyles. For instance, people now bring laptops to cafes instead of paper notebooks. Technology and design are intertwined, influencing how we live, sit, dress, and interact with our environments. Design must adapt to these lifestyle changes, ensuring it remains relevant and functional.

What would be your advice to young women looking to build a career in the interior design industry?

In three words, ‘believe in yourself’. Any hiccup along the way is a lesson learned. You might cry, feel sad, or misunderstood, but this is all part of the process. Don't stop at the first obstacle. If someone tries to bring you down, allow yourself to feel it for a moment, then stand up strong and keep going.

How has your family supported you on this journey?

My son is my source of strength, power, and energy. He is my life. Along with my husband, who is a great support, and my parents, I am blessed to have such a wonderful family. Their presence inspires me to keep moving forward. When my son looks at me and says, "Mommy, you’re beautiful", it becomes the highlight of my day, rejuvenating my spirit. Spending time with my son, Enzo, feels like time stands still. Everything around me freezes, and those moments are precious. Our family outings, especially playing golf together, are special. Although I had never played golf before, I became a member of a golf club for him. His passion for the game and the time we spend together rejuvenate my soul.
