Divya Goel
Lab Director

Diagnostics play a crucial role in shaping decisions at every stage of an individual's health, encompassing well-being and the trajectory of illness. A solitary diagnostic examination possesses the potential to completely alter a person's medical journey and overall life. The extensive insights attainable from a minute blood or tissue specimen are truly remarkable. MM Diagnostics situated in Moradabad city, which is at a distance of about 150 km from Delhi, was established in 1977 as one such pioneer in tertiary laboratory diagnostic services. For more than 45 years the laboratory has been dedicated to generating dependable patient test outcomes and following protocols that guarantee suitable and prompt patient treatment. Dr. Divya Goel, as the Laboratory Director at MM Diagnostics, effectively leads the entire plethora of testing services with a focus on quality, accuracy, patient satisfaction and delivering precise and appropriate patient diagnoses. Furthermore, she has consistently upheld a respectful approach within the organization's procedures. During a one-on-one interview, she shared her perspectives on the industry's operations and also offered glimpses into her personal life.

Guide us through your academic path and your previous exposure in the field. Inform us about the core areas of proficiency you have cultivated throughout your years in the industry.

I belong to Delhi and completed my schooling at DPS,  RK Puram. I did my MBBS from Grant Medical College, Mumbai and went on to pursue my MD in Pathology from KMC Mangalore. I began my career as a lecturer at Grant Medical College and JJ Group of Hospitals then did training in NBS Manchester UK. I joined MM Diagnostics in 2007 which was established by Dr. VK Goel in the year 1977. Together we embarked on expanding services, increasing the range of testing. We started our Histopathology deptt and Cytopathology dept. We started our Molecular lab in 2008 which was one of the first in that region. We achieved our NABL accreditation in the year 2012 which was another landmark in our commitment to quality and patient services. At MM Diagnostics, we provide Hematology, Clinical biochemistry, Cytology, Histopathology, Molecular testing and Microbiology aiming to dispel the notion that premier medical facilities are exclusive to metropolitan areas while striving for meaningful change.

Allow me to introduce you to MM Diagnostics. Enlighten us about the array of responsibilities you manage in your role as the Laboratory Director.

MM Diagnostics was established in 1977 as a result of my father-in-law Dr. VK Goels's efforts, with a vision to create an advanced diagnostic centre utilizing stateof- the-art technology. The centre evolved over time to become one of the most trusted centres in the region. In my role as the Lab Director at MM Diagnostics, my responsibilities encompass overseeing the entirety of operations, administration, and quality control of all the services. This involves continuous training for personnel engaged in various tasks such as testing, patient registration, and sample collection. Additionally, I provide advisory services to clinicians regarding test selection to ensure comprehensive patient diagnosis. Addressing complaints, establishing protocols, and monitoring staff activities also fall under my purview. Essentially, I bear legal, moral, and ethical responsibility for maintaining service standards and quality.

From your perspective, what are the most significant hurdles you face in your present position? How do you navigate these obstacles effectively?

One challenge that is universal for women in the business sector, myself included, revolves around the simultaneous demands of the biological clock and professional responsibilities. This was particularly for me when I had twins in 2009, right as I was also joining the organization. Balancing my children's well-being and my work without letting either aspect suffer was indeed challenging, yet ultimately gratifying as things fell into place with time. A supportive family, including my husband and in-laws, played a crucial role in helping me overcome these challenges. A professional hurdle in our diagnostic industry and one of the major issues is the proliferation of unauthorized labs across the country. While legislation is being enacted to address this, there's still progress to be made, with both central and state governments taking steps toward authorization.

I Do Not Lose An Opportunity Whenever I Get To Learn Something Or Maybe Unlearn Something Too

Discuss your top three career achievements and the guiding principles that have led to your success.

My top three milestones include pioneering the establishment of a molecular lab in 2008, achieving NABL accreditation in 2012 for all our departments, and our rapid response to the COVID-19 challenge. We initiated COVID testing early on, maintaining swift turnaround times to aid prompt treatment. This effort earned recognition, including a 2020 Certificate of Honour from the Honorable Governor of Uttar Pradesh for being an inspiring woman leader in the medical field. Additionally, I am also associated with NABL as a technical assessor in the field of Hematology and Clinical Pathology.

What is your outlook on the future trajectory of the Indian diagnostics sector? Which emerging industry trends do you believe will have the most significant influence?

The Indian diagnostics landscape is rapidly transforming, with a distinct focus on both the manufacturing and testing sectors. The initiative to establish India as a significant player in the global manufacturing realm, particularly in the In Vitro diagnostic industry, holds the potential to elevate the nation's stature. Additionally, the rise of digitalization, automation, and enhanced testing speed and accuracy while reducing patient costs are significant trends. Molecular diagnosis and cytogenetics are poised to become the mainstays for patient assessment. Interoperability between healthcare systems is gaining traction, fostering comprehensive patient analysis. In a nutshell, I see India emerging as a strong leader in the diagnostics industry and all of us associated will have a part to play.
