Agnes Koltay: Redefining Facade Engineering In The Middle East
Agnes Koltay
CEO, Koltay Facades
The exterior appearance of a building is more than just a visual representation of its architectural design. It is a testament to the seamless integration of artistry and engineering, brought to life through the expertise of facade engineering. This specialized field encompasses meticulous planning, design, and construction of building facades, ensuring that they not only captivate with their aesthetic allure but also withstand the test of time and nature's forces.
Koltay Facades is one of the leading companies specializing in facade engineering. The firm is led by Agnes Koltay, CEO, who is passionate about the unique combination of structural engineering and aesthetics in facade engineering, Agnes has a particular interest in high-rise buildings. Collaborating with talented architects, she strives to achieve innovative and visually striking results while remaining true to the original architectural intent.
Agnes' journey and expertise in facade engineering, combined with her dedication to excellence and innovation, position her as a prominent figure in the industry. With her leadership, Koltay Facades continues to thrive and contribute to the ever-evolving field of facade engineering.
Tell us about your early education, and professional journey.
Initially, I aspired to be an architect, but studying architecture made me realize its subjective nature. However, I found the combination of architecture, design, and structural engineering appealing. To specialize further, I pursued a second master's degree in facade engineering in the UK. Since then, I've been actively involved in facade engineering, including working at Zaha Hadid's renowned office in London, where I contributed to detailed designs for upcoming buildings. Eventually, I moved to Dubai in 2005 and established Koltay Facades in 2011. In 2016, we expanded to Singapore. Over the past 12 years, we've worked on over 145 projects across Dubai, GCC, Canada, Africa, Europe, and Asia.
I love learning new things and recently, I've been busy expanding my knowledge into Python programming, construction law and on the creative side, I've enjoyed art classes, where I've had the opportunity to paint and unleash my creativity.
Introduce us to Koltay Facades, idea behind the venture and its key areas of specialization.
Facade engineering, in particular, blends artistic architecture with objective engineering, as it determines a building's aesthetics and serves as its visible identity. It also withstands structural forces and influences factors like performance, water tightness, air tightness, fire resistance, acoustics, solar thermal protection, and more. Nature's harshness necessitates protection from elements like rain, temperature, noise, and animals, all of which a facade provides while remaining aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound.
I'm passionate about high-rise buildings and the unique blend of structural engineering and aesthetics in facade engineering. Collaborating with talented architects, we achieve innovative and visually striking results while staying true to the original architectural intent. However, corporate priorities shifted when my previous company was acquired, prompting me to establish my own company focused solely on facade engineering. We've had the opportunity to contribute to prestigious projects in Dubai and Saudi Arabia, emphasizing practical and reasonable design, including facade access systems.
“My personal mantra for success is to aim for perfectionism in every aspect of my work, rather than solely focusing on achieving success”
Throw some light on the different responsibilities you shoulder as the CEO of Koltay Facades.
I handle various responsibilities, including necessary, but less enjoyable tasks like payment collection and negotiation to ensure contract compliance. Business development and contract negotiation are also part of my administrative role.
As a leader, I promote effective internal communication and teamwork to avoid errors and frustration. Our collaborative atmosphere discourages internal conflicts and politics. I lead by example, seeking assistance from colleagues with expertise in specific areas and encouraging internal checks to ensure our work meets high standards.
While competent project leaders handle most tasks, I remain involved in technical aspects that interest me or require my expertise. I address critical problems and regularly review project progress.
Additionally, I contribute to conferences, teach at universities, give speeches, and offer technical opinions. These engagements showcase our expertise, enhancing our reputation and generating business through recommendations.
What are the most critical challenges you encounter as abusiness leader and how do you overcome them?
Non-payment and unrealistic time constraints are significant challenges in the architectural and engineering profession, as well as the construction sector as a whole. Tight schedules often lead to incomplete coordination and delays in project completion. Realistic expectations and sufficient time allocation would allow for better optimization, quality, cost-efficiency, and smoother progress.
Another challenge lies in the lack of defined deliverables and content in the field of facade engineering. Unlike more established professions like structural engineering or architecture, there are no clear traditions or standards regarding the expected content of final packages or drawings. This variability in content can significantly impact the price and effectiveness of a consultant. It is essential to compare the level of detail and scope in previous projects or during tender interviews to ensure the inclusion of comprehensive and beneficial information.
To mitigate these challenges, it is crucial for clients to provide clear instructions and guidance to contractors, minimizing risks associated with unclear directions and incomplete information.
Mention key milestones you have achieved throughout your professional journey? What has been your Mantra for success?
I've had the privilege of being involved in projects that pushed technical boundaries, such as some exceptional high-rises and quite a few prominent and unique complex geometry buildings. Recognizing the success of these ventures, I have been entrusted with even more complex and ambitious projects that require continuous innovation.
However, one milestone that fills me with great pride is the establishment of an exceptional work environment and company culture. Our team thrives in this supportive atmosphere, leading to long-lasting relationships with our valued employees. My personal mantra for success is to aim for perfection. By doing so, success naturally follows, and it allows for continuous growth and improvement.
How do you foresee the facade engineering landscape evolving in the Middle East going forward? Which industry trends will be the most impactful?
The rise of parametric design tools enables architects to explore complex geometries, driving manufacturers to adopt new technology. Facade engineers face more projects with intricate geometries, requiring expertise in scripting and computer analysis for buildability. AI-assisted architectural design enhances conceptualization and research efficiency, fuelling demand for non-linear geometries and unique material effects. Facade engineers face challenges in translating these concepts into practical designs. The industry is shifting towards energy efficiency and a holistic approach, emphasizing sustainability through considerations like life cycle, recyclability, shading, natural light, airtightness, and build quality.
