Women have always played a crucial role in the healthcare sector. Be it playing the role of primary care-givers to the elderly & infants or taking charge of medical institutions, woman have been doing it all. A majority of India’s nursing population which is said to be the backbone of the healthcare setup are also women. Indian women are also the leading demographic when it comes to pursuing medical degrees. Women’s importance in the healthcare sector can hardly be overstated.
Women have also found significant representation in the medical courses. Today, more women pursue medical education as compared to men. However, we do not see the same numbers when it comes to practicing doctors.
The field of cardiology is considered a demanding one and has abysmal geder ratio. Women make up less that 15 percent of practicing cardiologists in India. When it comes to interventional cardiologists, the number falls even lower to less than 5 percent.
Women cardiologists not only have to face the demands of the profession but also have to deal with gender bias which has been a hindrance in more women pursuing the field.
