Mohini Giri passed away on Tuesday. She was suffering from a long-time illness. Dr. Mohini was eighty-six and served as the Central Social Welfare Board's and the National Commission for Women's (NCW) chair from 1995 to 1998. In addition, she presided over the Guild of Service, a social service group with headquarters in New Delhi that defends the rights of women and children to work, education, and financial stability.In 1972, she established the War Widows Association. In recognition of her contributions to women's rights, she received the Padma Bhushan in 2007. "Dr. Mohini Giri has been an icon of the women's movement with her strong advocacy for a gender-just world," the Guild of Service said in a statement. Inspired by her vision, the Guild operates schools for impoverished children in Delhi, Rajasthan, Kashmir, and Uttar Pradesh, as well as shelter homes, family counseling centers, and capacity-building centers.The statement further mentioned that her tireless efforts highlighted the unique challenges faced by widows, demonstrating selflessness and positively impacting the lives of thousands of women worldwide.Meera Khanna, President and Trustee of the Guild of Service mourns the loss of Dr. Mohini Giri, who acted as a mentor and guide to her.
