8 OCTOBER2023INFOCUSINFOCUSThe President of India, Draupadi Murmu mentioned that the increase in representation of women in the legal system would be in the interest of the Judiciary while speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony for the Madhya Pradesh High Court's Annexe Building on Wednesday. President Murmu stated that there are roughly 9 per cent of female judges on the Supreme Court and 14 per cent of female judges on the High Court. She said that since women naturally have a sense of justice, they should be properly represented in the judicial system. The empowering of women in India is a crucial factor, she continued referring to the recently passed Constitution Bill 2023 in the Parliament which grants one-third reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.Eminent delegates marked their presences during the foundation ceremony where the President noted that it has been 42 years since the ADM Jabalpur vs. Shivakant Shukla verdict but the Top Court has changed it's decision now and the fundamental principles of the then decision made by the Jabalpur High Court in favor of the fundamental rights have been re-established by the Apex Court. She urged everyone involved in the legal system to work towards providing easy and quick justice to the general public. The difficulties the judiciary faces, including the vast number of cases still pending, a huge number of prisoners awaiting their trials, and the need to improve the infrastructure of the court were all mentioned by the President. She emphasized the number of pending cases that are roughly around 4.5 crores in the lower court's all over India which may have been there for 20 to 30 years.
