19 SEPTEMBER2023Excellence in Healthcare, Delivered with CompassionMadame in Medical Zone:Women in healthcare have demonstrated initial progress in moving up the organization and continue to report high job satisfaction. However, women also encounter persistent obstacles to advancement, particularly for senior positions, where they remain underrepresented. We highlight several new recommendations that healthcare organizations can take not only to level the playing field but also to ensure these actions achieve measurable improvements. Healthcare workers Leading from the Front-line: Undoubtedly, the healthcare professionals are performing essential roles, including caring for victims of COVID-19, ensuring patients have access to the right care, and developing vaccine and treatments. Healthcare professionals are receiving overdue recognition for their contributions, but it has come at a tremendous price: longer hours, increased stress and burnout, and, for those on the front lines, a greater risk of exposure and infection.Madame Workforce:Women are estimated to make up to 30 percent of doctors and more than 80 percent of nurses and midwives. Women's representation in healthcare remains high early in the pipeline, including in entry-level (75 percent), manager (70 percent) and senior manager or director (61 percent) roles, and has risen substantially compared with years past. Women are the primary consumers and decision makers in the healthcare market, and they make up almost 50 percent of the workforce: much of their advancement and leadership in the field rests on those facts. Madame Leadership:Women account for 67 percent of the global health and social care workforce. It is estimated that women provide essential health services for around 5 billion people worldwide. Women play a critical leadership role in the provision of healthcare across the Asia-Pacific Region, including during disasters. They are working to build more resilient health systems and helping transform the way healthcare is provided.
