6 JUNE2021Our mothers' generation was often taught that teaching was the best suited profession for them. The ambit gradually added banking as another suitable profession for women as these both these roles had relatively easier work timings. As a consequence over the years more and more women joined these fields and today overshadow their male counterparts. With time, another profession joined the list of `desirable roles for women' list, ie: Human Resource. The ingress of women into HR began in late 19th century during industrialization when females were hired largely to take care of other workers. The role evolved over time to include other responsibilities such as recruitment, work policies, work place management etc. the function of HR today has entirely evolved and has come to the very forefront. Women have also made the industry their own and have created a significant mark. So much so that in 2016 72 percent of HR managers were found to be women by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Similarly in 2017, Payscale.com found that a whopping 86 percent of HR generalists were women.Several theories have been floating around in order to explain why women hold a dominant position in the HR industry globally. Some attribute it to women's ability to be better managers, or to them being better at multitasking, or to women's superior ability to judge abstract qualities such as personality, ethics etc. it largely boils down to women having superior Emotional Quotient. This largely means that they can identify emotions and make informed decisions concerning thoughts and behaviors based on this insight. Although men possess a different form of EQ, studies suggest that women possess advanced empathetic and interpersonal skills. Such skills are key in terms of discharging HR functions such as resolving intra-office disputes, managing employees, and negotiating contracts. But the role of HR goes way beyond this.
