8 FEBRUARY2023IN FOCUSThe third time that India has hosted the biannual event in its history, the women's World Boxing Championships will be held here from March 15th to 31st in 2023. The prestigious competition has already been held in India twice, in 2006 and 2018, both times in the nation's capital, since it began in 2001. In addition, India hosted the Women's Youth World Championships in Guwahati in 2017. The global championship for men has never, however, been held in India.When the International Boxing Association (IBA) president Umar Kremlev visited India last month, the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) and the IBA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The countdown to one of the largest boxing tournaments in the world in 2023 has begun. The World Championships are proof of Indian boxing's unmatched qualities, and the Boxing Federation of India is prepared to provide an unforgettable event. Ajay Singh, President of the Boxing Federation of India, expressed confidence that the World Championships will help grow boxing internationally owing to the IBA team's support (BFI). Registration will soon be available for the tournament, which will be held in 12 weight categories: 48 kg, 50 kg, 52 kg, 54 kg, 57 kg, 60 kg, 63 kg, 66 kg, 70 kg, 75 kg, 81 kg, and +81 kg.Additionally, the BFI and IBA will be trying to implement a groundbreaking bout review system at the Championships. In recent years, boxing has rapidly expanded in India. In recent international and multi-event tournaments like the World Championships, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games, India has routinely placed among the top five nations. In the last 12 championships, Indian women have won 39 medals, including 10 golds.
