4 DECEMBER2022Editor NoteCHRO only C-Suite Role with True Gender Parity An HR's role is one that requires immense empathy. Very often HR specialists are tasked with conducting complex and sensitive conversations. It is believed that people find it easier to trust and open up to a female as compared to a male, which makes women well suited for the role of an HR. As a consequence we see women in large majorities when it comes to the role of a Chief Human Resource Officer. A Korn Ferry survey found that while a large part of C-suite positions across all top US companies were held by men, yet women outnumbered men in the role of CHRO role. It is the only role that has true gender parity, across all industry sectors and industries. The study surveyed 1000 US companies and found that 55 percent (in 2016) of CHROs across industries are women. Further it was found that the number of female CHROs at Fortune 200 companies saw a 60 to 67 percent rise between 2018 and 2019. Half of all outgoing CHROs were replaced by someone of the same gender. Within the survey it was concluded that in 43 percent instances a female replace a male CHRO, while only seven percent saw a female CHRO being replaced by a male CHRO.The CHROs role is linked very closely with the CEO. Studies found that the gender of the CEO was opposed to the CHROs. It was found that male CEOs often hired female CHROs and vice versa. It is believed that women possess higher emotional quotient which makes women highly intuitive. It allows them to be able to pick up on and understand non-verbal cues as well which makes them more of a people's person. However, attributing women's success as HRs and CHROs cannot completely be attributed to their gender. A CHRO is a C level professional who is required to understand the nitty-gritties of business and be well versed with other capabilities such as managing business partnerships. They also need to be sound decision makers and communicators in order to be successful CHROs. The current edition of Women Entrepreneur magazine shines the spotlight on some of the most illustrious women CHROs across Asia. These women leaders have pushed the envelope of the field of human resource and are at the forefront of strengthening their respective organizations. We hope reading their success stories will give you a glimpse into the making of an effective CHRO. Do let us know your thoughts. Rachita SharmaManaging Editor
