With the economic rise and expansion of the business landscape, there has also been a fall in gender inequality across several countries in the continent. Although significant progress has been made, yet Asia remains one of the most notorious regions for lack of women's representation in the work force, especially in top leadership roles. The region however has the most number of female heads of state (more than any other area). A majority of these unfortunately are not by virtue of their work or gender but have come to be owing to familial or dynastic relationships. Today women's responsibilities and ability as change-makers and leaders has been widely acknowledged. Women in decision making roles can facilitate productivity boost, improved ecosystem conservation, and foster more equitable & sustainable development. The ASEAN Gender Outlook 2021, questioned if Asian business leaders believe that organisations are doing enough to increase female representation in senior levels. The survey observed that women only held 24 percent of middle and senior management positions in the ASEAN business sector. The report noted that Asia as a continent has been lagging behind its global contemporaries when it comes to the percentage of female board members and female CEOs. the study found that out of the ten ASEAN nations the percentage of women managers only increased by 2 percentage points over the course of 20 years, from 39 percent in 2000 to 41 percent in 2020!The numbers are appalling to say the least. In such a scenario, it is important for policy makers and decisions makers in the region to take stock of the reality and take necessary steps to facilitate change. One of the key steps to bring more women into the workforce (as ironic as it may sound) is to bring more women into leadership roles. The qualities of real leaders that have come to define women's identities needs to be further developed. Organizations and individuals must take the route of educational initiatives, support, and training in order to impart knowledge, insight, organizational abilities, and self-assurance. Women leaders must then be created. Asian Women today are well-positioned to take advantage of their skills, willingness and capacity to adapt. By leveraging these skills and staying resilient as they have been so far Asian women can surely beat gender imbalance in the professional and business world.Do let us know your thoughts.
