Not one to be bogged down by challenges, Indians often don't shy away from moving to distant lands in the lookout for greener pastures. Of all the foreign nations that Indians move to, the United States of America tops the charts. Indian Americans today have a built a strong presence across various sectors and industries in America and are counted as one of the most prosperous demographics in the country. They enjoy a median income of $123,700 which is the highest among Asians in America.However, things weren't the same always. The very first arrival of Indians on the American soil dates back to the 1890s when a few Indians were brought to the country by the East India Company as servants. Soon after a group of farmers arrived on the West Coast and became laborers. In 1965 came the Immigration and Naturalization Act which ushered a new passage way for Indians to move to the US. First came the well-educated doctors, academicians, then their families. The scenario saw a massive boom post Y2K era. As IT became more popular the Indian techie population began making their way to the US. Cut to today, the number of Asians has nearly tripled over the past three decades and Indian Americans are the most prominent part of this demographic. According to the 2020 Consensus published by the United States Census Bureau, the US is today home to approximately four million Indians who make-up 1.2 percent of the entire American population. It is expected that among Asians Indian Americans will become the largest populations overtaking the Chinese demographic by 2030. Be it as doctors, tech experts in the Silicon Valley, startup founders, academicians, finance professionals or politicians, Indians have conquered nearly every important field that there is. Indian origin women have especially created a strong mark in the great American growth story, right from Nina Davuluri winning the coveted America crown in 2014 to Kamala Harris becoming the Vice President of the country, there is absolutely no doubt that Indian origin women have excelled across all fields. The current edition of Women Entrepreneur magazine brings to the fore a few such exceptional Indian American women leaders who have achieved great heights in the field of business. we hope their success stories will inspire the next generation of women leaders.
