4 AUGUST2022Editor NoteIndian Diaspora on the Rise in CanadaWe have often seen pop culture references showcasing Canadians as exceptionally nice, friendly and gracious. However this stereotype is grounded in some reality. After-all, Canada is one of the best countries to live in currently. Always high up on the happiness quotient, Canada is also said to be one of the safest places to live in globally. The country stood sixth in the Global Peace Index in 2021 owing to its good scores for internal conflicts, levels of crime, and political stability. A haven for students, the country has ensured that pursuing higher education is easier on people's pockets, be it residents of the country or international students. When compared to its neighboring country, the US, higher education in Canada is 27 percent cheaper. A thriving state with great business activity, the country also has low unemployment. While other nations were experiencing employment crises during the Covid19 pandemic, Canada successfully kept its unemployment rate of 5.67 percent. Needless to say, the country is an attractive destination for individuals looking to migrate. Indians were early to catch the boat to the land of opportunity and Poutine. Canada is today home to the world's eighth largest Indian diaspora. Indian-Canadians are one of the fastest growing communities in Canada according to data by Statistics Canada. They make up the second largest non-European group in Canada after Chinese Canadians.A major role in the rise of Indians migrating to Canada is owing to the efficient migration process, structures and systems. It acts as an incentive for skilled Indians looking for job prospects overseas and an overall improved life. The past three to four years have witnessed more and more Indians immigration into Canada. Shortage of IT and healthcare professionals is another reason for the rapid rise of Indian immigration into the country. Nearly 60 percent of immigrants support the Canadian economy by starting new businesses where newcomers own more than 33 percent of businesses.
