4 MAY2022`Goa is a state of mind'; this is a common phrase used by Indian travelers and tourists. Romanticizing of the coastal state of Goa is owing to the serene and relaxed environment that it has to offer. Goa is popular for the abundance of natural beauty it possesses, along with a general vibe of `fun & frolic'. As a result, the state receives hordes of tourists from across the world all through the year. Needless to say, tourism is one of the most lucrative sectors in Goa. But the state has a robust presence across agriculture, fishing and pharmaceutical sectors as well. A wide coastline and great connectivity to states such as Maharashtra have also resulted in Goa being a hub for shipbuilding vertical. Rich in iron ore and manganese, Goa also has a strong suite in mining. Over the years, Goa has also risen as a lucrative manufacturing base. From cement, electronic goods, fertilizers, medicine, and pharma machinery to tyres & tubes, Goa is home to several manufacturing units for varied products. Lately, Goa has also been making an active attempt to build a strong startup eco-system. The state is gradually becoming a hotbed for young startups and entrepreneurs owing to the state government's initiatives such as infrastructure and policies. In an attempt to strengthen the startup ecosystem, the Goa state government has facilitated plenty of incentives for entrepreneurs in the form of seed capital, skill development and working spaces. Over 250 startups have been certified by Startup Promotion Cell, Government of Goa and Startup India, DPIIT, Government of India collectively. The state offers one of work life balance opportunities and great quality of life, making it a desired locating for talented professionals. Despite everything going for the state, there still remains a vast chasm when it comes to women in the workforce. According to the data presented by the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) conducted by National Statistical Office (NSO), only 24.9 percent of Goan women work. This number is drastically lower than the national average of 28.7 percent. Where are the working women of Goa? The answer to this question could be manifold; ranging from societal challenges to infrastructural issues to opportunities and the nature of industries popular in the state. A lot needs to be done, and it needs to be done fast to bring more Goan women into the work force. A starting point could be bringing to the fore shining role models of women leaders who have made it big in their respective fields.
