However, for the sleepy town of Kharagpur in West Bengal, a watershed moment came in the year 1951. The Government of India established the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) in the small town and suddenly made it a seat of quality higher education for generations to come. The educational institute is the very first of the IITs to be established by the Indian government and is recognised as an Institute of National Importance. The institute was initially established to train engineers after India attained independence in 1947. Today, IIT Kgp is a public institute of technology research university which is ranked among the top colleges in India.
